Day One - Yerevan

Upon landing at Yerevan International Airport, the Golden Eagle team will warmly welcome you and escort you to the exquisite five-star Alexander Hotel, your accommodation for the first night.

Situated in the heart of Yerevan's historic quarter, the Alexander, a Luxury Collection Hotel, offers a prestigious central location for a luxurious and relaxing stay. The hotel's façade, dating back to the 18th century, provides a captivating glimpse into the country's rich history. Tonight, indulge in a delightful Welcome Dinner at the hotel. This is the perfect opportunity to mingle with your fellow travellers as you anticipate the exciting journey that lies ahead.

Day Two - Yerevan

The Yerevan skyline is graced by the majestic Mount Ararat in nearby Turkey, its snow-covered peak standing tall on the horizon. With a history dating back to 6,000 BC, Yerevan holds a rich past, marked by the construction of the Erebuni fortress in the 8th century BC. Over the centuries, the city changed hands between conquerors, alternating between Turkish and Persian control until 1827 when Russia claimed it. In 1920, it became the capital of Soviet Armenia and, after the Soviet Union's dissolution, the capital of the independent nation of Armenia.

Today's exploration leads you 23 miles (37 km) from Yerevan to the ancient Geghard Monastery, a captivating complex of churches and tombs intricately carved into the rock.

Later on, you will pay a visit to the pagan temple of Garni, dating back to the 1st century and dedicated to the Sun God Mitra. Explore the remnants of an ancient fortress, palace, and baths in this historic site. Returning to Yerevan, your itinerary includes a visit to the Cascade giant stairway and the Cafesjian Museum of Modern Art.

As evening falls, it's time to board your exclusive Golden Eagle private train, commencing your rail adventure bound for Almaty...

Day Three - Lake Sevan & Dilijan

On the morning of day three, awake to breathtaking scenery as the train glides along the picturesque shores of Lake Sevan. A brief stop allows you to stroll to the beach.

Alongside Lake Van and Lake Urmia, Lake Sevan was once part of the trio known as the great lakes of the historical Armenian Kingdom, collectively known as the Seas of Armenia. Notably, Sevan is the only one now located within the borders of the present-day Republic of Armenia.

Your adventure continues as you head to Dilijan, where you'll visit the Monastery of Haghpat, a masterpiece constructed between the 10th and 14th centuries. Nestled in a lush forest amid the gorges of two small mountain rivers, this monastery provides a captivating setting for the prominent St. Astvatsatsin Church, its most significant structure.

Day Four - Tbilisi

Venturing into Georgia, today's itinerary starts in the captivating city of Tbilisi. Nestled within the Surami Range, the city sprawls along the banks of the River Kura, covering a stretch of 17 miles (27 km). Despite the upheavals of wars and fires that have reshaped Tbilisi over time, the old quarter preserves its original charm—a labyrinth of narrow, meandering streets and alleyways that weave a historical tapestry.

Our exploration includes visits to significant historical sites such as the 13th-century Metekhi church, an integral part of the Royal Residential complex with its distinctive cross-cupola design. You will also discover the 5th-century Sioni Cathedral, Tbilisi's primary church. A stop at the recently constructed Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the world's largest Orthodox churches, awaits you, followed by a leisurely walking tour through the old town and along Rustaveli Avenue. Along this route, you'll encounter architectural marvels like the Great Hall of the Georgian Philharmonia, a post-World War II masterpiece erected between 1969-71. Our journey through Tbilisi will also unveil the treasures housed in the Janashia Museum of Georgia, offering a glimpse into the city's rich cultural heritage.

Day Five - Telavi

Today, get ready to delve into the enchanting Kakheti region, nestled alongside the majestic Great Caucasus Mountain range. Known as the cradle of Georgian viticulture and wine-making, this picturesque area promises a journey through time and taste.

Your exploration leads you to the Tsinandali country estate, a gem belonging to the Alexandre Chavchavadze family. Situated near Telavi, just a scenic couple of hours' drive from Tbilisi, this 19th-century marvel boasts a captivating blend of a splendid garden, a house museum, a sprawling park, and a historic winery. Prepare to be immersed in the rich legacy of the Chavchavadze family and savour the essence of Georgian winemaking in this idyllic setting.

Day Six - Gori, Uplistsikhe Cave & Mtskheta

Day five invites you to journey into the ancient city of Gori, a historic gem that traces its roots back to the 7th century AD when it was founded as Tontio. Notably, it's the birthplace of Joseph Stalin, the Soviet leader, born in 1879. The small house where Stalin spent his early years is preserved under a canopy near the imposing Stalin Museum, housed in a grand columned palace-like building. A peek to the side reveals Stalin's private railway carriage, adding a unique touch to the experience. As you explore the museum, filled with intriguing photographs, delve into the complex history of a man who left an indelible mark on the world.

From Gori, your journey takes you directly to the captivating Uplistsikhe, a famous cave city dating back to the 6th century BC. Carved into a rocky plateau, it unveils echoing halls, winding corridor streets, chambers for pagan worship, and even the remnants of Georgia's oldest theatre. Rooted in prehistoric traditions, Uplistsikhe's strategic position allowed it to control the surrounding terrain, although it faced numerous attempts at destruction. In the 13th century, Genghis Khan's son Khulagu finally succeeded in capturing and destroying the fortress, leading to the tragic end of life within its walls.

As the late afternoon unfolds, you'll visit Mtskheta, Georgia's Old Capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Immerse yourself in the historical significance and ancient monuments that make Mtskheta a captivating destination.

Day Sevan - Baku

Welcome to Baku, the vibrant capital of Azerbaijan, situated on the western shore of the Caspian Sea and the southern side of the Apsheron Peninsula. Nestled around the graceful curve of the Bay of Baku, the city boasts a strategic harbour sheltered by the islands of the Baku Archipelago and protected from northerly winds by the Apsheron Peninsula.

Baku's global significance is deeply rooted in its expansive oil industry. The heart of the city is the Old Town, also known as the fortress of Icheri-Shekher. Strengthened walls, added post the Russian conquest in 1806, still stand, along with the iconic 90 ft (27 m) Kyz-Kalasy Tower (Maiden Tower, 12th century). The walled old town presents a picturesque spectacle with its labyrinth of narrow alleys and ancient structures, including the Palace of the Shirvan-Shahs, transformed into a museum, with its oldest part dating back to the 11th century. Another 11th-century gem is the Synyk-Kala Minaret and Mosque (1078-79).

Among other historical landmarks are the Law Court (Divan-Khan), the Dzhuma-Mechet Minaret, and the mausoleum of the renowned astronomer Seida Bakuvi. Beyond the fortress walls, the modern city of Baku unfolds, with regular streets and impressive structures ascending the amphitheatre-like hills encircling the bay.

Tonight, you will be staying in the opulent Five-Star Four Seasons Baku (or similar accommodation) for two nights, while the train is loaded onto the ferry to cross the Caspian Sea

Day Eight - Baku

This morning's adventure starts with an exclusive Freedom of Choice tour of the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape. Just 40 miles (64 km) from Baku, on the picturesque west bank of the Caspian Sea, Gobustan unfolds as an extraordinary archaeological site adorned with over 6,000 pre-historic rock engravings. Explore the remnants of inhabited caves, settlements, and ancient burials that provide a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich history. Conclude this immersive experience with a delightful lunch overlooking the Caspian Sea.

As the afternoon unfolds, the choice is yours—opt for leisurely free time in the city or indulge in the vibrant arts scene with a visit to a local theatre. The day comes to an end with a delectable dinner in a traditional local restaurant. Experience the perfect blend of exploration, culture, and culinary delights on this unforgettable day.

Day Nine - Ashgabat

After a hearty breakfast, you'll embark on a morning flight to Ashgabat, known as the 'Las Vegas of the Kara Kum'. Nestled between the Kara Kum desert and the Kopet Dag mountain range, Ashgabat stands as a relatively modern city, rising upon the historical foundations of the Silk Road city of Konjikala and the Soviet city constructed following the devastating earthquake of 1948.

The city's opulent fountains, glistening golden domes, and towering contemporary structures may seem oddly juxtaposed against the desert backdrop. During your visit, you'll have the opportunity to explore the National Museum and Kipchak Mosque, unveiling the cultural and architectural wonders of Ashgabat.

As the day draws to a close, you'll reunite with the Golden Eagle to resume your onward journey by train, setting the stage for another chapter in your remarkable adventure.

Day Ten - Darvaza

On day 10, the Golden Eagle pauses briefly for a scheduled stop at Ichoguz, granting you the option to disembark from the train and for a short journey to witness Darvaza's renowned burning gas crater. This spectacular sight is most enchanting when seen under the cover of night. Situated amidst the heart of the Kara Kum desert, this region abounds with natural gas, and the 70-meter-wide crater has earned the local moniker, the 'Door to Hell.' Remarkably, it has been burning for over four decades, creating a one-of-a-kind experience that you won't want to miss.

Day Eleven - Khiva

Your journey continues as the train makes its way to Urgench, where you'll make a seamless transfer to the ancient city of Khiva. This historic gem, founded 2,500 years ago, holds a special place in the chronicles of time. Once a vital trading hub along the Silk Road, it now proudly boasts World Heritage status. Khiva's strategic location serves as the crossroads where the routes between Mongolia, Russia, China, and Persia converge.

As you approach, the city emerges from the desert landscape, revealing a treasure trove of remarkable architecture. Stepping back in time, you'll have the privilege of exploring Khiva's grand mosques, bustling bazaars, and iconic minarets, all nestled within the protective embrace of its ancient walls. It's a journey through history that promises to leave you in awe of the city's enduring magnificence.

Day Twelve - Bukhara

Bukhara is nothing short of extraordinary. Just like Khiva, UNESCO took charge of the city's restoration efforts, leading to a remarkable transformation for its 2,500th anniversary celebration in 1999. The real joy of your visit to this city lies in immersing yourself in its unique atmosphere, allowing you to relive the fascinating history that unfolds at the crossroads of Asia.

One of the most captivating highlights of your journey is the visit to The Ark, a fortified residence that once housed the Emirs of Bukhara. These were the powerful and often ruthless rulers who held sway until the Soviet era. Beyond the city's limits, you'll have the opportunity to explore the Emir's enchantingly named 'Palace of the Moon and Stars,' adding another layer of enchantment to your adventure.

Day Thirteen - Samarkand

The mere mention of Samarkand evokes vivid images of the Silk Road, more so than any other town. Founded in the 6th century BC, Samarkand's resplendent architecture offers glimpses into its illustrious past as one of Asia's most significant cities. It's particularly renowned for its architectural treasures dating from the 14th to the 17th century when it thrived as the legendary capital of the Mongol empire under Timur and his successors.

Today, you'll have the privilege of visiting some of the city's most iconic sites, including the magnificent Registan Square, the graceful Bibi Khanum Mosque with its exquisite proportions, and the Ulag Beg observatory, a marvel of early Islamic astronomy constructed in 1428. As the evening descends, you'll return to the now-illuminated and awe-inspiring Registan Square, creating a truly unforgettable experience.

Day Fourteen - Tashkent

Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, beckons you to explore its modern Soviet-style urban landscape, painstakingly reconstructed after the devastating earthquake of 1966. Your tour of this remarkable city encompasses the Old Town, where you'll find traditional homes and religious edifices gracing the narrow streets. A special highlight awaits in a small library, where you'll have the privilege of seeing one of Islam's most sacred relics—the world's oldest Koran.

The journey continues with visits to the Railway Museum and the Museum of Applied Arts, offering you a deeper insight into the city's rich culture and history.

As the day winds down, you'll come together for a memorable Farewell Dinner onboard the Golden Eagle. It's a heartwarming way to bid adieu to Tashkent and prepare for your overnight journey to the final destination of Almaty.

Day Fifteen - Almaty

This morning marks your arrival in Almaty, the ultimate destination on your journey, where you'll bid a fond farewell to the Golden Eagle. Your day is brimming with explorations as you embark on a tour of Almaty, commencing with a visit to Panfilov Park, a serene oasis nestled in the heart of the city. The park is graced by the presence of the Zenkov Cathedral, a remarkable 19th-century Russian Orthodox Church, notable for being entirely constructed from wood.

For a comfortable night's rest, you'll be staying at the InterContinental Almaty Hotel, (or similar) ensuring you end your adventure in absolute comfort and style.

Day Sixteen - Almaty

After a delicious hotel breakfast, the Golden Eagle Team will arrange your transfer to Almaty Airport for your onward flight. If you're eager to delve deeper into the wonders of Almaty and its surrounding regions, why not consider extending your stay with additional nights?
