Upon arrival in Istanbul, you will be met by your representative and transferred to the legendary five-star Pera Palace Hotel. Steeped in history, this hotel stands proudly in the centre of Istanbul, overlooking the stunning Golden Horn.
During your first night, you will be treated to a welcome reception dinner with your fellow travellers. This is the perfect opportunity to eat, drink and relax before your adventure begins.
The magnificent city of Istanbul lies in both Asia and Europe. The colourful combination of East & West makes Istanbul a truly unique place to visit.
The first stop for Day 2 is Hagia Sophia. Built in the 6th century, the Hagia Sophia is a great architectural beauty and an important monument both for the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Take some time to absorb the breathtaking mosaics on display.
Later in the afternoon, you will make your way to the iconic Golden Eagle Danube Express. Next stop Bulgaria.
After a refreshing night's sleep in your luxurious accommodation, enjoy the spectacular views of the Shipka Pass from your window, before arriving at your first stop.
Veliko Tarnovo is Bulgaria’s ancient capital and is located along the historical hills of Sveta Gora, Tsarevets and Trapezitsa. The town is majestically perched on the two banks of the Yantra River, cutting a unique gorge through the Turnovo Hills. On this tour, you will have the opportunity to explore the perfectly preserved Tsarevets Hill Castle, as well as the ancient streets and narrow alleyways of the city itself.
Back on the train, relax in the Bar Car as you wait for dinner to be served. Enjoy a leisurely meal as the train continues across the Romanian border.
While you sleep, the Golden Eagle Danube Express will begin its climb over the Carpathian Mountains. When you wake in the morning, the view from your window will offer rugged landscapes and glistening mountain streams.
On today's itinerary is a tour of the stunning Peles Castle - a Gothic Masterpiece that has to be seen to be believed. Peles Castle or Castelul Peles in Sinaia, Romania, was the summer home of the Romanian royal family from 1883 until 1947. Whilst here, marvel at the intricate carvings on the exterior, before experiencing some of the most impressive art and design in European history.
When the afternoon rolls around, it's time to board the train for lunch as you glide through more breathtaking landscapes on your way to Bran Castle. Commonly known as Dracula's Castle, Bran Castle is probably the most famous medieval castle in Romania. Perched atop a steep cliff, the castle guards an important trading route that connects the historic regions of Wallachia and Transylvania. After a guided tour of "Dracula's Castle" and its grounds, you will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of dining within the walls of a 14th Century Castle.
After a relaxed breakfast, the train will arrive at Sighișoara - one of seven Saxon walled cities in Romania built by the Saxons in the 12th century. Enjoy a relaxed walking tour and marvel at the well-preserved medieval architecture and cobbled streets.
For lunch, it's time to make your way back to the train as you continue on towards Sibiu. Sibiu is well-known for the Germanic architecture in the Old Town and throughout the city, you can see the remains of medieval walls and towers.
After a day of exploring, settle in for a sumptuous dinner as you travel across the Great Hungarian Plain
When you awake on day 6, enjoy a relaxed morning as you approach Kecskemét - a breathtaking city in the centre of Hungary. Take this opportunity to admire the Art Nouveau buildings and flourishing plant life. Then it's time to head back to the train and head to Lajosmizse for the world-famous 'Puszta' horse show.
Late afternoon, the train will arrive in the gorgeous Hungarian capital of Budapest, located on the banks of the river Danube. Next, check-in at the five-star Gresham Palace Hotel before heading to a local restaurant for a farewell reception dinner. The perfect opportunity to reflect on this incredible journey with your fellow travellers.

All prices shown are for one adult ticket. Sleeper journeys are based on two adults sharing accommodation. Single occupancy of cabins may incur additional charge.

There are a limited number of private tables and cabin types onboard. While we keep our website updated regularly, there may be occasions when private tables or cabin types become fully booked meaning we are unable to fulfil your booking requirements. Should this be the case, we will contact you to discuss alternative options and refund any payments made.
We have the right to refuse the request of a deposit when a journey is scheduled to depart in less than 16 weeks. If you choose to book with a deposit you must pay the remaining balance in full 15 weeks before departure at the latest. Should you fail to pay the remaining balance 15 weeks prior to departure, you will forfeit your deposit and your booking. Deposits are accepted by request. Most journeys require a 25% deposit to secure a booking however some specialist journeys do require a 50% deposit. Please contact us for confirmation.
Tickets are sent electronically around 5 days before departure. You will not receive tickets or any form of 'gift pack' in the post. This is in an attempt to reduce paper use and do our part for the environment.
